How to setup a Blackberry Pearl to work with Gmail
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Setting your Blackberry 8100 (Pearl) to work with Gmail is pretty straight forward. There is two methods you can use but I’m only going to cover the one I’m currently using. I’m going to assume you have the Unlimited Data plan and its working and have already set up your blackberry.net address. This instructions are geared towards T-Mobile users but should be easily modified to fit your provider.
Gmail Setup
1) Log into Gmail and goto Settings
2) Click on the Forwarding and Pop tab at the top
3) Check “Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on”
4) Save Changes
Blackberry Setup
1) Log into T-Mobile
2) Under Messaging, click on “Set Up Blackberry Internet E-mail”
3) Click “Setup Account”
4) Enter your @gmail.com address and password
5) You should now receive a TXT message saying your account has been successfully setup
You should now start receiving your Gmail emails almost instantaneously.
Filters
One small problem you will notice with Gmail is that every time you compose a new email or reply to one, you receive a copy of that email on your Blackberry. Its annoying to say the least. We can fix this with a Server side filter.
1) Log into T-Mobile
2) Under Messaging, click on “Set Up Blackberry Internet E-mail”
3) Click the Filters icon under your Gmail account
4) Click “Add Filter”
5) Create a Filter name. This can be anything, I call mine “Gmail Sent”
6) Choose “From field” in the Apply Filter when:
7) Type your gmail.com address in the “Contains Field”
8) Select “Do Not forward messages to handheld”
You should now no longer receive replys on your Blackberry.
I setup my Pearl for gmail, and now the hourglass pops up for 1 second… every 3 seconds. As best as i can tell, the phone is constantly checking for messages, and i find it a nuisance. Is there any way to fix this? Maybe make it check once every 5 minutes?
Since Email to a Blackbery is Push, the phone doesnt “check” for messages so I doubt its related. Take your battery out for 2 mins then power up your Pearl and see if it stops.
I have it on my Treo 650 and I can’t make it work. I am using Movamail http://movamail.com/ from my accounts and I don’t know if it’s good idea to move to gmail mobile?
@HuLsH
Sorry, I do not have a Treo so I can not be much help
Thanks so much for this! The gmail sent messages bounce was driving me nuts. Now it works perfectly. Beautiful!
Thanks so much… I couldn’t find the filter anywhere. I love gmail, but the duped messages was driving me crazy.
Do they filter out of your Gmail account too?
Or just on the blackberry?
@CH – Just the blackberry.
I have the Cingular version, I didnt try this yet.
But does anyone know if when you reply is there a copy of the reply also on gmail?
@Jnetty – yes a copy is on gmail. The filter just filters out it from being recieved on the blackberry.
This process has fallen over for me at first step. I don’t get the option to select ‘Set Up Blackberry Internet E-mail’ :( Any ideas?
@Hem – Its under Messaging on the my.tmobile.com website.
THANK you for this guide. The sent messages thing was driving me up the wall.
How do you set up filters on cingular pearl?
I am on vodafone in the UK
I had to go to http://www.mobileemail.vodafone.net to get these options. Hope this helps some other people
im revieving random emails from ppl..how do i block them?
HI GUYS
when I receive an email I also receive an SMS how can I avoid that? is there a way to separate them so I don;t use all my SMS thanks Matteo Ps my phone is a blackberry pearl
Hi -
This is an excellent guide. One Quick question. If I have read the message on the blackberry will it still be marked as unread when I log in to gmail.
How do I change this.
Kaushal
I’m thinking about getting the Pearl. To use the push email features, is there any additional monthly charge? I’ve already got the T-MobileWeb add-on, but was wondering whether I’d also need to get a Blackberry add-on too?
@MR – You will need to upgrade to the $19.99 Blackberry Unlimited Add-on. It replaces the T-MobileWeb as your addon.
Cingular users: You can manage these preferences, accounts and filters at: http:mycingular.blackberry.net
Just added the Gmail “filter” as Alec described for his T-Mobile account to my Cingular account and it resolved the same issue I was having with receive emails I sent from my Gmail account on my Blackberry.
Cingular Blackberrys allow you to set-up a Blackberry account during the device’s set-up process. Use the same user name and password set-up there for the mycingular.blackberry.net website. Enjoy.
Using a Blackberry in Thailand
If I buy the phone do blackberry charge a monthly fee for using there handset or is it similar to any handset that is bought in Thailand where as once you have bought the handset you then only pay the service provider i.e. AIS / DTAC for calls made and GPRS usage time?Whats this about paying Blackberry for push email???

how do i install gmail mobile on my blackberry without going through the T-mobile with browser. is there a way i can do a a manual installation?
@icefrog – You can try using the Desktop Manager. I’m on a Mac so I don’t use it but if there is anyways to load it offline, it would be through Desktop Manager.
@ Alec Peden – ok. do you know where i could get the gmail mobile exe file for blackberry?
@icefrog – I would assume http://www.gmail.com/app
THANK YOU A GAZZZZZILLION!!!!!!! It was driving me NUTS!! and I called T-Mobile and of course they blamed it on gmail when in fact to fix this you have to go to t-mobile website…imbeciles….
thanks again!!!!!!! :)
Please forgive a naive question. I’m trying to help my wife set up her new BB 8300. As I understand it, to have her Gmail pushed to her BB, she needs a BB email account, which is (I forget) $20 or $40 a month. Is it possible to access her Gmail account without a BB email account, i.e., by going to Gmail via BB’s browser? If so, is there a way to put a Gmail icon on her BB, so she can simply click it to access her Gmail account? I understand that her Gmail wouldn’t be pushed to her BB, but $20-$40/month is a lot of money for a feature she wouldn’t be using all that much. Thanks in advance for your help!
@Jscott – I’m assuming your with AT&T if she has a 8300 so I can’t comment on pricing since i use T-Mobile. But I play $20/month for Unlimited internet and BB email. There are a few options to get Gmail on the phone but all will require some kind of internet plan. If you have access to the web, you can use the Mobile Gmail page at m.gmail.com or you can install the Gmail application directly at gmail.com/app. I think the Mobile Gmail app is going to work great for what your looking for.
how do i copy the contacts in my g-mail account from my mac to my blackberry curve?
@tristan – There is not direct way of doing it. You could export our contacts from Gmail, Import them into Address Book then using something like PocketMac or Missing Sync to sync that way.
Thank you! The cc to myself was driving me crazy!! I’ve been f-ing with gmail vs. Pearl for hours!
Works perfectly for the new t.mobile BB curve 8320 as well. Thanks Alec.
How do you fix this on Verizon? Its driving me coo-coo! ! ! !
Has anyone got gmail calendar synching with the blackberry pearl calendar? I tried the icalc plug in but it didn’t work. Help gratefully received!
@Melissa – There isn’t a straight forward way of doing this. The way I did it was I used Spanning Sync to sync my gCal to iCal then used Missing Sync for Blackberry to sync my iCal to the BB’s calendar. This is Mac specific but I’m sure there is a similar route you would take for Window based PCs.
I have an 8100 on a corporate account so logging in at my.tmobile.com is not an option for me… However, there is a filters function on my phone when i am in the email application. I press the menu button and scroll down to “Filter Sender”
That takes me to a screen titled “Email Filters”.
There’s an option that says “If no filters apply, send email to handheld” and I have that set to “YES”.
Then there’s a list of filters I have created, each with checkboxes. I assume that I should check them if I want them to be active and uncheck them if I want them to not be active?
Then I have a filter for a particular high-volume sender (email list) that I don’t want sent to my phone. In this filter, I just have the email address that the mail comes from in the “From” field and nothing else… with the action “Do not forward” selected.
The problem is, it doesn’t work. I still get every email from the list that I don’t want. What do I do now?
@nhl – I’m sorry but I only used my Pearl with a BIS server, not BES. It sounds like you’re in the right spot tho as those are the same options as the BIS server provides.
I’ve had my gmail account set up with my Pearl for some time (btw, THANKS for the sent email filter!), and most of my messages come through right away, but once a week or so my messages come thorugh an hour or so after they were sent. Do we just have to ‘deal’ with this, or am I doing something wrong?
I have done the same as Alec, Spanning Synced my gCal to iCal, then Missing Synced my iCal to BB. Problem is that the Spanning Sync 1.1.4 upgrade caused problems with Mac Sync Services. Once I fixed this by dumping /Library/ApplicationSupport/SyncServices either of teh two programs worked, but not both. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it or is there a different app besides Missing Sync or PocketMac to sync iCal to BB? If not, I would chose SpanningSync which is the most useful of the two programs.
dude you’re the man! just got the curve from t-mobile. your solution made my switch to blackberry worth it! happy holidays!
Question, and this might be obvious, but when you set up the mail to go to the BB, will they also show up on the web mail? Or will I have to go and switch the POP every time I get on and off my computer? Because that’s how it sounds … which sounds like a lot of maintenance. Thanks! Your post is super helpful, assuming I get a good answer here, heh.
@Chavi – The will show on your webmail also. No worries.
Hey, thanks. So I set this up, but I’m still getting the sent messages despite having the filter … what’s the deal?
(Note: I have an @uchicago.edu account, but have it set to go through to an @gmail.com account. So just for good measure, I put the filter on to not send anything from my @uchicago.edu or @gmail.com account. But it’s still sending them to me! HELP!)
Scratch that … I was using commas instead of semi-colons. I’m a moron!
Thanks again :)
I am having the same problem with composed emails being forwarded onto my BB pearl regardless if they were composed on my BB or my actual gmail account. I have my BB thru Verizon so I am not sure how to fix this problem. I tried figuring it out on my actual gmail account but that is not really working. Any suggestions? Thanks.
@Jena – I’m not sure how Verizon’s BB service is setup but there should be a special webpage where you can setup your email accounts. Under there should be a section for Filters. Make a new filter with your email address in it and set it to “Not Forward to Blackberry”. That should be enough.
You literally saved my sanity. Thank you SO MUCH. I was going to lose it if I got another gmail SENT message!
Thanks
hey thanks a bunch i was trying to figure out that problem for the longest time and easy to follow instructions …. much appreciated :)
thanks for the instructions easy to read andvery helpfull even though im from canada!!! thanks again much appreciated :)
Perfect! I followed your instructions and was up and running in minutes. Thanks so much!!! :)
Perfect! I followed the instructions and was up in running in minutes. Thanks so much!!! :)
Cool, thanks for the tip – this helped me out a lot as I just set up Google apps for my business and it was going to kill me to have all the sent messages basically doubling up in my inbox. Yikes!
Also, for anyone else who comes here, not that Google just released Sync to sync your GCal and your Blackberry or other device. It’s still got some bugs, but works pretty well.
This is so helpful! Thank you!
I have the same question as Matteo…Every time I receive an e-mail I also get a duplicate SMS message…Anyone know how to get this to stop?
Thanks again, the filter is awesome!
FOR VERIZON – go to https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=vzw to log into the blackberry email account, then follow the instructions here http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB10332. The sent thing was driving me NUTS!
My gmail filter stopped working!!! I just got a new bb (to replace the old) and the filter for gmail always worked and now it won’t. I followed the instructions perfectly. The filter is set up to block “from” messages from my gmail account and the “do not forward” is selected. Saved. All good? No! Doesn’t work. Anyone else have this problem???
Does anybody know how to correct this problem with AT&T service!?!? I am going absolutely crazy, and there are step by step instructions for Verizon, T-Mobile, etc…but not AT&T! Help?
My sanity is back. This was driving me nuts, but the directions worked like a charm. Thanks.
I have a Sprint BB 8300 with Gmail mobile. I can’t figure out how to get it to stop sending me my emails once I send them. I go through the settings and yet I can’t figure it out. I must be missing something or Im just stupid and ignorant. Thanks for the help.
For BB to Gmail Contacts sync, try this:
http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/gmail-contact-sync-conjola-sync-public-early-beta-59004/
don’t download anymore programs for a fix. just follow the gmail instructions and you can stop the messages from sending to you. just search gmail help! they give you step by step instructions
Excellent Post, thanx for sharing the same.. Will keep on reading the post :D
Stumbled your post .. cheers
