Building a Hackintosh - OS X x86 on PC hardware
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Here is what i used to get OS X 10.4.3 x86 up and running using PC components as my everyday PC. This should last me until the Intel Mac Minis are released and I can actually get my hands on a real Mac.
I used macosx_10.4.3_8f1111_for_dtk_userdvd.dmg, converted it to ISO using UltraISO and then patched it with JaS 1111a Generic Patch v4.2b PPF. Burned it to DVD and that part was done. Next was putting together the hardware.
Motherboard: Foxconn 915GL7MH-S Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915GL Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - $66
CPU: Intel Celeron D 336 Prescott 533MHz FSB LGA 775 64-Bit Processor w/ Execute Disable Bit Model BX80547RE2800CN - Retail - $89
Memory: Corsair VS512MB400 512MB DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 Value Select Memory Retail x2 - $40.99
Hard Drive: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L300S0 300GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB Buffer - $123.99
DVDROM: Pioneer DVR-110 16X Dual Layer DVDRW Drive (Black) - $46.50
Case: Generic from local PC shop - $65
Keyboard: Apple Pro Keyboard - $29
Total: $501.47
Alright, now that we got our PC ready, its time to install. Now I’ve read a bunch of different methods to install involving partitioning with partition magic, windows diskpart, using vmware etc. I didn’t need any of that.
1) Boot up the PC with the DVD in the drive and set to boot.
2) At the Installation Screen, goto Tools > Disk Utility.
3) Choose the drive on the right.
4) Click the Partition button and choose 1 Partition from the drop-down menu. Hit the Partition button on the bottom to partition the drive.
5) Close Disk Utility and continue the install.
5) Click on the Customize button and Uncheck the Developer Tools and whatever printer drivers you don’t need.
6) Finish Installing.
Problems i ran into:
While USB keyboard and Mouse worked during the install, it didn’t after first boot. I had to use a PS2 Keyboard and Mouse to finish the setup then deleted AppleFPMemDriver.kext and AppleTPMACPI.kext from the Extensions directory. After that i rebooted with USB keyboard and mouse plugged in an they worked with no problem after that.
Sound output only works out of Line-Out, not Speaker-Out.

I’m guessing this won’t work on a PC with an AMD processor?

[...] OS X can now more or less run on PC hardware thanks to something called Hackintosh. [...]

can someone explain why running mac os would be better for music and graphics? besides being more stable. Thanks for this! can I run OSX on a amd 32 bit 1600?

@adam - Its not so much better than a preference. Much like using iTunes or Windows Media Player to listen to music. Back when I did this, it only worked on Intel chips but I believe there is a patch for AMD now.

Yes, but you have to hack the bios to tell the CPU it has a SSE3 chipset instead of a, obviously, SSE2 chipset. And then once in OSX you must change out a couple of files and code so that OSX takes full advantage of your CPU resources.

Oh, and AMD is not a problem and never was! Don’t listen to the idiots that say it ever was an issue as they have no clue about OSX86! I got OSX on an AMD 3500, a pentium 2, and a pentium. There are ways to get an SSE to think its an SSE2, and then from there tell it, it’s an SSE3.

Mac has the better reputation because most of the professional software tools for composition, recording and mixing either don’t exist for PC’s or they tend to work better on a Mac. Most of the software for PC tend to be more for play and recreation, not professional tools. But SaDiE, which is a fantastic package for audio mastering, is PC-only… So I don’t think any argument about one being inherently better for audio could really stand up to scrutiny.
People talk about Macs being more stable… That can have a BIG impact your ability to stay right-brain creative while working, without having to switch over to left-brain to troubleshoot.
Mac versus PC really shouldn’t be your first consideration though. Figure out which SOFTWARE best fits your needs and the way you work (and your budget) and then figure out which platform that particular software works best on.

Bollocks, OS X will not run on anything less that the SSE2 instruction set. It relies on rosetta to allow PPC apps to run using the sse3 set, however there are patches to emulate sse3 on sse2 machines.
SSE will not work, so dont bother. Its like trying to make a mouse operate a hot air balloon.

@ caliboi You can emulate SSE2 on SSE machines, then emulate SSE3 on top, but it makes them quite slow. Nonetheless it can be done so dont whine
@taigkyo The whole point I’m getting my Mac OS is for logic and ableton, two Mac OS only pieces of great software
@ marco c and everyone else. There is no longer “PC and Mac” (It was only an illusion made by mac fanboys anyway) Mac is officially just another OS now that just happens to have been attempting to force us to use only thier hardware. There is only PC. There was only PC to start with. (P.S What I mean is Macs have always just been PC’s locked so they can only be used with a certain software, much like games consoles)
As for your hardware marco, it should work, but make sure you have a competent graphics card as well.
